MOVING WITH A PET MADE EASY

You think you’ve got everything ready for the big day. Boxes are packed, local Vancouver movers are booked, beds are all pre-disassembled. Oh! Wait a minute, what about your friendly dog “Ruffles” and “Scratches” the cat? Animals of all kinds can sense a change going on around the house. Your fur babies can find moving to be a stressful time in their lives. Here are a few tips to make life for your furry family members more pleasant and stress free.

MAKE THEM AS COMFORTABLE AS POSSIBLE:

Travelling distances whether long or short can be very stressful on your pets. If you can avoid caging them, do so. Otherwise make the environment as comfortable as possible for them. Have water available to them. A favorite toy is also a good idea. If you can, let them out for walks if it’s a long drive. Don’t leave them in a car or truck in hot weather. Feed them if they get hungry.

GET A TRAVEL PACK READY FOR YOU PET:

Do this early. Its easy to accidentally pack your pets’ necessary items and find out on move day that you are without. Get a travel bag or box ready with everything your pet needs for travel. Mark this package well to insure the movers don’t accidentally load it in the truck.

HAVE THE RIGHT PERMITS OR PAPERWORK READY:

This can easily be overlooked. If your crossing borders, you will need to inure you have all the paperwork in line for moving your pet. Check with local border policies for what is required for each individual pet. Some exotic animals may not even be allowed in some countries. Planning this step well in advance is highly recommended.

SOME PETS DISAPPEAR BEFORE MOVE DAY:

Most commonly this is a cat issue. A dog’s home is with its owners, but cats are very territorial. If they sense you are packing up and leaving, they have been known to run away. It’s a good idea to keep your cats indoors and gather them up a day or two before the move. A good place for the cat is a bathroom. Mark the door to keep movers out, and leave plenty of water and food with a litter-box nearby.

SPEND TIME WITH THEM DURING TRAVEL:

Your pets enjoy your love and attention. Keep their stress levels down by petting, walking and talking to them. Even your voice can sooth a stressed-out pet.

HAVE THEM MOVED AHEAD OF MOVE DAY:

Pets can get in the way on moving day. Especially if you’re hiring professional movers. If its possible, have your pets moved the night before. This will insure you have more time with the pets on their move, and more time to direct the movers on move day.
